Alice Miller Ballard Mullins, age 90 of Danville, WV, passed away May 27, 2013. Alice was born on November 25, 1922 to Susanna Miller and Jeremiah Miller at the head of Six Mile creek in Boone County. She was the youngest of eleven children.
Alice married Aubrey C. Ballard November 8, 1947. She and Aubrey owned and operated a grocery store at Haddleton for several years. The store was a gathering place for family and neighbors. Aubrey’s son, Seibert, and grandchildren, Larry, Joe, Jenny, and Terry were frequent visitors and a big part of Alice’s family. Aubrey died October 17, 1971.
Alice and Hayes Mullins were married April 28, 1977. She and Hayes traveled throughout the area and knew the “country roads” of the surrounding area better than most due to their hobbies of berry picking and “searching for treasures” with a metal detector and often having success. Both loved to garden and shared their harvest with others.
Alice loved quilting and hand stitched many beautiful quilts. She loved flowers and collected flower seeds which she sold by mail. She was an avid Bible reader and liked to discuss the scripture. She regularly answered the Bible questions published weekly in the Coal Valley News and was often recognized for answering all the questions correctly. Alice was a good cook and delighted in putting a good meal on the table.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hayes Mullins who died April 27, 2000; her parents; and all her siblings: Myrtle Mabe, Velva Roberts, Mattie Sanders, Gladys Ball, Burtis Miller, Dollie Ballard; by her nephews Leslie Roberts, Boyd Mabe and Marvin Sanders; by nieces, Zena Maye Sanders, Helen (Ball) Qualy, Nola (Ball) Gee, Inez (Sanders) Mathews and Faye (Sanders) Derouin; and by her stepson, Seibert Ballard.
