Arthur Ray Rhodes

November 19, 1942 — April 30, 2014

Arthur Ray Rhodes, nicknamed by some as "Onion Sack", 71, of Robinson, WV went home to be with Jesus on April 30, 2014.

He was a retired coal miner of 30 years from Bethlehem Steel. He had also worked at Jasper Mining and Westmoreland Coal, including other jobs throughout his lifetime. He was a long-term member of the U.M.W.A.

He was born at Clothier, WV on November 19, 1942 and was the son of the late Walter and Florence Rhodes. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mona "Monnie" Tolson; second wife, Peggy Stover; brother, Tracy Rhodes; and sisters, Sandra Green and Mary Jo Savva.

He is survived by his four children: Teresa (Bub) Jones of Big Ben, WV, Shelia (Steve) Ingram of Fuquay Varina, NC, Sandy (Ernie) Brown of Willow Springs, NC, Randy Ray Rhodes and (Randy’s girlfriend Vicky) of Robinson, WV. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four nieces; three nephews; brother, Jerry Ball of Lick Creek, WV; and sister, Janie Griffis of Washington Heights, WV.

Arthur was a good man with a big heart, a great sense of humor and was respected by all who knew him. He was a hero and role model to many. He was a great father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He was loved so very much. He will be missed more than words can express but will remain in our heart and memories forever.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Park, Danville.

Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
