Betty (Hager) Long, widow of John M, Long, of Branchland, WV passed away peacefully on December 14, 2016 at Hospice of Huntington.
Born July 28, 1929 at Gill, WV to the late Everett and Ethel (Neal) Hager. She is survived by her children and their spouses John and Carolan Long of Lutz, FL; Joyce and Wallace Turley of Branchland, WV; Susan and Jim Roberts of Odessa, FL; six grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; sister Emma Skeens; brothers Watson (Jane) Hager; Franklin and (Beulah) Hager; sisters-in-law Minnie and Betty Hager; many special nieces, nephews, and family friends.
In addition to her parents and husband she is predeceased by sister Virginia (Darrah) Hill; half-sisters Wynona (Sylvester) Smith and Hester (Kermit) Adkins; brothers Enoch A. “Sonny” Hager, Keith A. Hager, and Everett (Linda) Hager.
Betty enjoyed a lifetime of singing gospel music, attending church, Senior Citizens Center, and served as board member for many years at L.C.O.C. She had a love of working in her garden, canning vegetables that was shared to many, and apple butter makings. Betty had a passion for caring for friends and family who were in the hospital or ill.
Funeral services will be conducted at the McGhee-Handley Funeral Home at West Hamlin, WV December 17, 2016 at 2:00 pm with visitation for friends at 12:00 pm. Interment will immediately follow at the Franklin Cemetery Branchland, WV.
Services will be conducted by Pastor Lenny Romans with special speaker Lonnie Scragg and singer niece Melody Adkins. Flowers are appreciated as well as donations in memory of Betty to the St. Mary’s Hospitality House, 2801 South Staunton Road, Huntington, WV 25702
Special thanks to her cardiologist of over 40 years Dr. Ralph Stevens who saw her through many health battles, St. Mary’s Medical Center Intermediate Care staff, and Hospice of Huntington.
