Carolyn Louise Meek (Viars), of Gordon, WV, passed away at home on August 28, 2016, after a long and brave battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 78 years old.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert B. Meek, Jr., and her parents, George and Mildred Viars.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Robert B. Meek, III (Parabh), Kara Hopper (Robert), Valerie Long (David), and Andrew Meek (Tara); her grandchildren, Lauren Hopper, Yasmeen Meek, Melody Long, Wesley Hopper, Zarah Meek, Robert B. Meek, IV, and Mitchell Long; her brothers, George “Buddy” Viars (Brenda) and Carlyle Viars (Shirley), and her baby sister Ann Warren (David “Jake”).
Carolyn was born on May 28, 1938 in Logan, WV. She graduated as Salutatorian from
Sherman High School in 1956, and worked at Appalachian Power in Charleston for 10 years. After much persuasion, she married Dr. Meek on March 25, 1967, and the two raised their family in Gordon, WV.
Carolyn was a faithful member of the Gordon Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and children’s music director for many years. She enjoyed linedancing with her friends, and music of all kinds. She was also a board member of the Boone County Community Organization, and member of the Van Elementary and Van High School parent/teacher organizations, Garden Club and Red Hat Society.
The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Diane Hager for her exceptional care during these last 4 years, and also gives special thanks to Barry Hurley for always lending a helping hand.
A memorial will take place on September 2 p.m. Friday, September 2 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with Joe Ballard officiating. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carolyn’s life. Memorial donations in Carolyn’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association West Virginia, or Pet Helpers, Inc.
Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
