Carrie Opal Baker Skeens, 93, of Milton, formerly of Branchland, widow of Douglas Skeens, left this world and entered into the Kingdom of Glory on Thursday May 29, 2014 at home surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.
Carrie was born at Branchland on October 6, 1920 to the late Martha Naomi Adkins Hatfield Baker and John Newton Baker. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde Hatfield, Emmitt Hatfield, Grover Hatfield and Alvis Baker; four sisters, Hazel Dyer, Reedith Porter, Reva Napier and Hulda McChristian; and son-in-law, Thomas Ellis.
She was a charter member of Liberty Missionary Baptist Church.
Carrie is survived by three children, Phillip Kyle Skeens (Maurine) of Milton, Carrie Diana Ellis of Salt Rock and Sharon Gail McCloud (Ike) of Milton; seven grandchildren, Phillips Skeens II, Brent Ellis, Lisa Skeens, Shannon McNeil, Christie Wright, Nikki Little and Kelli Wallace; 18 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren with another due this year; two sisters-in-law, Norma Hatfield and Carolyn Ramey (Kiah); along with special nieces, LaDonna, Anita, Andrea and Dreama; as well as a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to give a special thank you to Carrie’s daughter-in-law, granddaughters and great-granddaughter who took such special care of her during her illness. In addition, the family would like to thank her doctor, Gregory Carico for his kindness, ready smile for our Mother, calm demeanor and his steady patience and to Bobby Moore and Christie Davis of Hospice for their care and compassion during this difficult time, to Rhonda Layne whose quiet sweet voice calms in crisis, and lastly Rosie Ragland Mother’s caregiver and friend.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home at West Hamlin with Pastors Kim Stone and James Jobe officiating. Visitations will be two hours prior to the service. Burial will be at Watson Cemetery, Branchland.
