Charles William Ellis

June 22, 1954 — November 6, 2014

Charles William Ellis, Jr, known as Charlie to most, was born on June 22, 1954 in Madison to the late Charles William Ellis, Sr. and Kathleen Sadd Ellis. He was a lifelong resident of Madison and a lifelong supporter of the community including the VFW. He was an unassuming, meek and exceptionally kind individual who knew everyone and loved everyone he knew. Charlie passed away on November 6, 2014 surrounded by his family. Charlie was preceded in death by his father Charles William Ellis, Sr., mother-in-law Dolores Marie Chiera, and sister-in-law Sandra Chiera.

Charlie graduated from Scott High School in 1972 and attended West Virginia University for one year before transferring to the Ohio Institute of Technology where he completed an Associate’s Degree in Electronics. He returned to Madison and began working with his dad and two uncles at Ellis Department Store. Charlie would later take over Ellis Department Store with his dad in 1986 until 1992 when Charlie Sr. retired. Charlie Jr. and his wife Brenda would eventually close the Ellis Department Store doors in 2007 after 71 years of business so they could help Charlie’s mom run Boone HomeCare Supplies for the next 5 years. He would then ‘retire’ and begin his new career of a handyman which had always been his passion. His wife Brenda remained by his side during this new adventure, even though their time was cut short.

He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Madison.

Charlie was a fighter and lived for his family each and every day, which became even more apparent through his fight with cancer that lasted just short of 13 months. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 34 wonderful years Brenda Chiera Ellis; daughters Christina Ellis Hannah (Forest) of Charleston, WV, Carrie Beth Hager (Joey) of Hewett, WV and Courtney Kaye Ellis of Madison, WV; grandchildren Maylee Jo Hager of Hewett, WV, Charles Henry Hannah of Charleston, WV and a new grandbaby due next May; his mother Kathleen Sadd Ellis of Madison, WV; sisters Marcia Ellis Hatfield (Burr) of Madison, WV and Pamela Ellis Ellis (Steve) of Charleston, WV, father-in-law James Franklin Chiera of Madison formerly of Barrackville, WV and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Narender Jogenpally and staff, Dr. Brian Plants and staff, the 3rd floor West staff at Thomas Memorial Hospital and the Hospice staff.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Julia Price Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 1026, Madison, WV 25130, or the Scott High School Varsity Cheerleaders, #1 Skyhawk Place, Madison, WV 25130.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 10, 2014 at St. Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Madison with Fr. Dass and the Rev. Rich Mahan officiating.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Handley Funeral Home in Danville.
