Clarence Douglas "Doug" McNeely

Clarence Douglas “Doug” McNeely, 82 of Alum Creek, WV, departed his earthly life on April 9, 2019, after a long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Born on February 21, 1937, Doug was the youngest son of Emmet W. and Alice Hill McNeely, of Wharton, WV. He graduated from Van High School in 1953, at the age of 16, attended WV Institute of Technology, and proudly served his country in the US Army. He began his career in the mining industry with Armco Steel in 1971, and was retired from Peabody Coal. He was a member of the O’Dell Lodge and a past member of the Alum Creek Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older brothers, Carmel, Harold, and Warren.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Brenda Ann Foster McNeely. They were married on May 26, 1961, and were together for almost 58 memory-filled years. 2 daughters, Beverly Ann Hager (Les), Mary Alice White (Danny), 3 grandchildren who were the absolute center of his universe, Eric Douglas Hager (Ashley), Corey E.W. White, Lesli Ann Hager Slone (Matthew), 1 great-granddaughter, Madison LeeAnn Slone, and a second great granddaughter arriving in October, that he learned of just days before his death. 1 brother, Ray (Gay), 3 sisters, “Susie” Harless (Willie) Mary Crate, (Bill), and Betty Sunukjian (Tommy). One brother-in-law, Tom Foster (Carolyn). He also leaves behind a loving nephew, Randy McNeely (Margie) and family of Rock Hill, SC, and a niece, Becky Ford (Brian) of Summerville, SC, in addition to several other nieces, nephews, many neighbors and close friends.
Doug was a man of vast knowledge, and he possessed many talents, he always had time to help a friend or neighbor. His fondest hobbies were woodcrafts, gardening, camping, fishing, bird watching, and spending quality time with his family. He volunteered his time and talents over the years to projects and activities at local schools, Little League Baseball, and Cub/Boy Scouts. Any project that could benefit the youth of the area, he could be counted on to help. He will be lovingly and fondly remembered as a man who adored his family and always put them first.
The family would like to thank Dr. Richard Hayes for the outstanding care he provided over the years as Doug’s physician, the wonderful support staff of Mountaineer Home Care, and Hospice One, as well as to Mary, Danny & Eric, the primary caregivers in his final days.
A graveside service is scheduled for 12pm, Thursday, April 11, 2019. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Low Gap. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Doug’s honor and memory to a local Little League program or a local Cub/Boy Scout Troop. Handley Funeral Home is serving the McNeely Family.
