David Eugene Black slipped away peacefully to his eternal reward Sunday evening, May 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Huntington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Huntington, West Virginia.
The son of Oval and Odbert Black, he was born on June 25, 1950. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; his parents Oval and Odbert Black; and his brothers, Meredith, Jesse, Whitley, and Delmas Black and sister, Lizetta Stratton. He is survived by his daughter, Tabitha (Sean O'Donoghue) Black and his son, David (Mashawna) Black. He is further survived by the grandchildren he cherished, Lily Black, Emma Black, Zara O'Donoghue, and Grady Black. He also leaves behind his beloved extended family and friends.
A founding member of Lincoln Church of God, he always spoke lovingly of the pastoral care of his church, the love of his brothers and sisters in Christ, and the mighty promise that awaited him and his fellow faithful.
David worked in the coal industry for many years as a mechanic. Retirement arrived with initial health challenges which he bravely overcame. In recent years, he spent his days lovingly helping with grandchildren. After Gloria's untimely passing, Pappy David eased seamlessly into newfound roles as school run maker, doctor appointment taker, and sideline fan for his girls. The 2018 arrival of his grandson, Grady, filled him with joy and pride.
Prior to his final year of health struggles, Pappy devoted plenty of hours to Gloria's 2000 Ford Ranger. Parts of all sizes and consequence would be ordered and installed, allowing Pappy to get the vehicle fixed, again and again, letting him get from Upper Big Creek to Hamlin and beyond. Much like his final year of ailments, he worked and worked to help that truck overcome the odds. Thanks to his faith and devotion, that truck still runs. With his deep faith and devotion in Jesus Christ, Pappy David is being welcomed into Paradise, free from the chains of infirmity and the limitations of this world. May he rest in peace.
Viewing will be from 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Lincoln Church of God in West Hamlin, with Bishop Lonnie Wilson officiating. Funeral service will begin at 2 p.m., with burial afterward in Lovejoy Cemetery, Palermo. Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin is handling the arrangements.
