David Ray Holstein, 63, of Danville went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 4, 2013 after a long battle with cancer.
He was born September 10, 1949 and was the seventh of ten children of the late Fred D. and Juanita Lamp Holstein. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Larry, Dale and Eddie.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Diane Roberts Holstein; loving son, Jonathan David of Bedford, Virginia; two brothers, Bobby (Joyce) of Cross Lanes and Danny (Sandra) of Danville; four sisters, Carolyn Miller of Cary, NC, Patsy (Larry) Cole of Wilmington, Ohio, Judy (Jack) Kelley of Holiday Island, Arkansas and Glenna (Jim) Stewart of Danville; sister-in-law, Paula Holstein of Danville; brother-in-law, Donnie (Pam) Roberts of Madison; three aunts and one uncle; 15 nieces and nephews; 16 great nieces and nephews; and many cousins, friends and loved ones.
He was a 1967 graduate of Scott High School; received a Mechanics Degree from WV State College in 1969; entered the Army in 1970 and was a Vietnam War Veteran having received several medals, including the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 of Madison, WV. He was also a member of the American Legion. He retired from Dominion Hope Gas Company in 2007.
David was an active member of the Donley Fork Beagle Club, serving as vice-president for several years; a member of the Southern WV Horseman’s Association, in which he was a Fast Pace Champion; and was a softball player for the “Old Timers” team.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with David May officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 of Madison, WV.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
