Dennis E. “De” Cook, 85, of Ridgeview, WV (Boone County) passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Boone Memorial Hospital, Madison, WV.
He was born October 10, 1926 in Barrett, WV the son of Ashby and Alma Green Cook. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Lee Cook who was killed in an automobile accident in Fairmont, WV in 1988 while attending Fairmont State College; a brother, Charles W. Cook; and a sister, Loretta Cook White.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delores W. Cook; brother, Bernard Lee (Julia) Cook of Concord, NC; sisters, Margaret Waterman of Harrisburg, NC and Mildred Welch of Concord, NC; sisters-in-law, Virginia Cook of Marion, Va. and Imogene Kinder and Loretta Woodrum both of Ridgeview; nine nieces; 15 nephews; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and many friends.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and employed as a coal miner for 42 ½ years at Eastern Associated Coal Corporation, Peabody and Patriot Coal. He was proud of his profession and spoke frequently about the years of employment in the mines.
He was an Elder, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent of the Brush Creek Presbyterian Church at Ridgeview, WV for many years.
He was a World War II veteran having served in the Navy on the Fanshaw Bay Escort Carrier. He was a member of Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV and active in meetings until his illness prohibited his attending.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers and Honorary pallbearers will be former Governor Bob Wise, Congressman Nick Joe Rahall, Attorney General Darrell McGraw, former Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Steve Paine, Larry Ladato, Director Boone County Development Authority, Joy Underwood, President WV Coal Festival and Attorney Howard Persinger.
Visitation at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV will be Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with the Rev. Ralph Judd Alford officiating, assisted by Pastor Tom Chafin, First Christian Church, St. Albans, WV, Dr. Frank Frye, Madison Methodist Church, Madison, WV and Pastor Richard Harold, Rumble Community Baptist Church, Ashford, WV.
Music will be provided by Ed and Marilyn Gaunch of Charleston, WV.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Brush Creek Presbyterian Church, 2870 Ridgeview-Nellis Road, Ridgeview, WV 25169.
Burial will follow at Memory Gardens, Low Gap, WV with Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 Madison, WV conducting military graveside rites.
