Donald Wynn “Donnie” Woody passed away suddenly on September 22, 2018 at his home in Quinlan, West Virginia. Born August 11, 1954 in Madison, WV, Donnie grew up in Washington Heights and attended Scott High School, graduating in 1972. Shortly after high school he began a career as a Lineman with Bell Atlantic, eventually retiring with 30 years, from Verizon. He was a part-time resident of Seebert, WV, where he and his family spent countless hours at his camp on the Greenbrier River.
Donnie was a fiercely private man, but a light in the lives of those closest to him. He was a master of jokes and a genius at trivia; a curator of history books and a collector of British comedy shows; a lover of animals and a teaser of grandkids; a faithful Chicago Cubs fan and a member and supporter of the CWA (Communication Workers of America). He was an all-around great human being, whose absence as a husband, dad, papaw, brother and friend will be felt long into the future. We will miss his omelets and vegetable soup, his humor and wit (both appropriate and inappropriate), his kindness, his integrity, his stoic demeanor, and his never-failing tendency to be there when you needed him most.
He was preceded in death by his parents Denver & Erma (White) Woody. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley Woody; his best furry friend, Ruthie (whom he rescued personally); his daughters Karissa Workman and Sarah Woody; his son-in-law and buddy, Roger Vannoy; grandchildren Zack, Eli, Megan, Rowan, and Josie; great grandchild Marlee; brothers Mike and Matthew Woody; and his lifelong best friend, Mark Dolin.
A memorial service for Donnie is being postponed until late October to ensure those closest to him may attend. Those interested in attending may contact Sarah for details.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal shelter in Donnie’s name.
