Earl E. (Jack) Dolin

August 28, 1920 — December 24, 2015

Earl E. (Jack) Dolin, age 95, of Ottawa, WV and Smith Mountain Lake, VA. was reunited with his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years on December 24, 2015. Born on August 28, 1920 on Hewett Creek WV, he was the oldest child of Clyde Warren Dolin and Grace Ann Bias Dolin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2004 by his beloved wife Doris Evelyn Greene Dolin, sisters Beulah Dodd (Gilbert), Deloris (Wootzie) Hopkins (Lilburn), Jean Meadows (Leroy) and brother John Dolin (Paula).

He leaves behind to miss him: his son Earl Stanley Dolin and wife Karen and daughter Patricia Gae Hunley and husband Bill of Ottawa. Grandchildren Tami Dolin Riggs (David) of Alexandria, VA, Marina Hunley-Graham (Tom) of Cherokee, NC, Jack Wilson Dolin (fiance Crystal Curry) of Ottawa, WV and Judith Hunley Clayton (Casey) of Timberlake, NC. Great grandchildren Andrew Riggs, Kathryn Riggs, Morgan Hunley and baby Evelyn Clayton due to arrive this Spring. Also surviving brother-in- law and sister-in-law Glen and Dot Greene of Madison and many nieces and nephews. Two who were especially close to him are Cathy Lilly and Susan Watkins.

Earl was a graduate of Scott High School and a World War II Army Veteran. During the war he served in Europe until 1945 and was then moved to the Philippines where he remained until the war ended.

From the time he and Doris married on Dec. 28, 1940 he never stopped working to provide for his family. He worked for a gas well drilling company, managed property for Dr. Harless, sold Peoples Life Insurance, owned a small mine and eventually established Dolin Construction where he contracted with Westmoreland Coal from the late 1940’s to 1985.

He was a member and trustee of Clothier Presbyterian Church, a member of the VFW, the United Mine Workers of America, the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge #170 in Madison and a 33rd degree Mason of Madison O’Dell Lodge #ll5, 32nd degree Mason in Logan and Charleston, and a member of the Beni Kedem Shriners International.

He enjoyed many parts of his life but he never seemed happier than when he was at his house at Smith Mountain Lake, VA. It did not matter if he was on the boat fishing, mowing grass, or sitting on the porch looking at the lake, he was smiling.

The family would like to express our gratitude to Candy Mitchell who has done so much for him in the 11 years since Mom died. We are so grateful to Marvin (Goose) Foley who has been there for Dad during the last six years, also a thank you to a neighbor Terry Anthony for his help. The past 18 months we have also relied heavily on caregivers Jessica Sutphin, Angie Gore, persons from Boone Home Health Care, and Kanawha Hospice. May the Lord bless each of you. You are truly appreciated.

Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 Handley Funeral Home, Danville WV with Rev. Tom Bias and Rev. Charles Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison, with military graveside rites by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison. Pallbearers will be members of the IOOF.
