Elery Garrett Loftus, 86, of Quinland passed away June 23, 2016 at CAMC General Division, Charleston, WV.
He was born January 6, 1930. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Esther; his son Wayne Scragg; father Ventrue Loftus; mother Thelma Loftus Barker; step-father Virgil Barker; and brothers Denzel, Teddy and J.D. Loftus.
He is survived by son, Ronnie (Peggy) Scragg, Patricia (Harold) Jarrell, Elaine (Frank) Javins, Eva Cooper, Wilma Loftus, Pamela Loftus and Sandy (Troy) Groeb; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one special dog that he loved so very much, Poochie.
He was a member of the Uneeda Church of Christ for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was an avid woodworker, with one of his clocks hanging in the State Capital and the Boone County Court House. He was an incredible story teller and always brightened the mood of those around him. He loved being a coal miner and was a proud member of the UMWA. His many hobbies included the outdoors fishing and hunting, rebuilding gravely tractors, Taxidermy, leather works, woodworking, gardening and canning vegetables from his garden. He loved working in his work shop and collecting tools. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He touched the lives of so many family and friends throughout the community, never meeting a stranger, but most of all his love for Jesus Christ. He had a faithful and strong belief in his love for the Lord. His love and passion for his wife of 63 years were the greatest years of his life, other than his little dog Poochie.
On behalf of the Elery and Esther Loftus family we would like to thank the caregivers who have taken such loving care of our parents, Amy, Shirley, Wendy, Barb and Brittney, many thanks to BJ Sontag who maintained the property and always offering a helping hand, Crystal Watkins for her years of hardwork, dedication and support as his case manager with UMWA, Boone Home and Healthcare, many thanks to the staff at CAMC General Division, Dr. Biswaz and the Neuro Science staff RN Zachery, the ER staff at CAMC General, ministers Roger Dingess, Richard Runyon, and the Uneeda Church of Christ.
