Ernest Julian Chafin

Ernest Julian Chafin, 92, of Madison, WV passed away Thursday, March 7, 2024 at his home.

He was born at Omar, WV on April 15, 1931 to the late John and Blanche Chafin.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John B. Chafin; sister, Billie Jean Kuhn; son-in-law, Steve Smarr; and grandparents Gilbert and Laura Isaacs.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Adkins Chafin; sons, Michael Kim of West Madison, Ernest Mark of Forest, VA, and Randy Joe of Madison, WV; daughter, Kathy Smarr of Marietta, GA; sister, Doris Perry of Spring, Texas; grandchildren, Cristen Jandreau, Jared Chafin, Amber Chafin, Cameron Chafin, Noelle Chafin, Sterling Chafin, Zachary Smarr, and Taylor Dean; great-grandchildren, Macie Spurlock, Carter Jandreau, Jordan Jandreau, and Palmer Smarr; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Ernest was a member of West Madison Baptist Church. He was an All-State at Guyan Valley and played in 1950 North/South football game.  He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kanawha Hospice, Kevin Hill PA, Handley Funeral Home, Brad and Joyce Goodwin, West Madison Baptist Church, and Pastor Ray Barker.

A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at West Madison Baptist Church with Pastor Ray Barker officiating.
