Fred Hudson Covert, 92, of Greenview, WV went home to be with the Lord on April 17, 2014. He passed away at home.
He was born at Blair, WV on August 29, 1921 and was a son of the late Everett Covert and Cordia Potter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Caro Belle Barger, Nora Jane Owens, Ben Covert, Laura Ruth Brandon, Bobby Keith Covert; and his son Freddie Joe Covert.
He worked for Westmoreland Coal for 28 years and retired in 1981, he worked for Sports Coal Company for 9 years, he served for the Merchant Marines for 3 years, and he was Superintendent/Mine Foreman for Ferrell Mines for 9 years. He was also a member of the U.M.W.A. for 38 years and a member of the Westmoreland Mine Rescue for 10 years.
He was a member of: Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge 99, 32 degree A&A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Valley of Charleston, and Valley of Logan since 1974, The Odell Lodge #115 of Madison, and he was a Signature Member of the Kanawha Valley Amateur Archaeological Society.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Relda Frances Felty; his children Flora June Parks, Frelin James Covert, Fonda Jeanette Keyser and Freeda Jean Russell; 18 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.
Fred had many hobbies; he loved to hunt and fish, garden, can food and make jelly and do woodwork. He was a bee keeper and he harvested honey. He enjoyed catching snakes, going ginsenging, hunting arrow heads and molly moochers. One could call him a mountain man. He was known as “The Dollar Man” to the grandchildren because he would always give them dollar bills. The grandchildren also called him “Papaw Booboo”. He was one of the best people to go to for advice and he told great stories. He was loved by many and will be missed.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with Ron Gibson and Frank Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in Family Gardens, Madison.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
