Gary Allen Dempsey, 70, of Bim, WV caught a ride to Heaven on that Old Ship of Zion on Thursday, February 18, 2016. He was born February 3, 1946 to the late Joy Dempsey Lucas. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Charlie and Nervie Dempsey; and his daughter Kim Dempsey.
He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 39 years, Freda; three daughters, Hope, Tonya and Sherry; son, Gary; sister, Bunny; brother, Charlie; five grandchildren, Scotty, Amber, Shiann, Destiny and Bethany; four great-grandchildren, Calli, Hunter, Addison and Elizabeth; niece, Chrissy; great-nephew, Lawson; two great-nieces, Aubrey and Calista; Aunt Ruby and Jewell Nichols who were both like a mother to him; and a host of cousins, church family and friends.
He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA Local 781 for 45 years. Gary was a very humble, honest, spiritual and loving man. He loved his family and friends and most of all he loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He has been a faithful Christian since June 23, 1980 and was a member of Browns Branch Freewill Baptist Church. We will truly miss his songs, testimonies, his “happy” tears and his smile that just warmed your heart. He wouldn’t want us to be sad, he would tell us to rejoice, he’s home with Jesus! We love you Poppy, we’ll see you in Heaven.
Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, February 22 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with the Rev. Phil Rowe and Chip Frame officiating. Burial will follow in Workman Cemetery, Bald Knob.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
