Pastor Gary Leslie “Pete” Jarrell, 73, of Jeffrey, went to be with his Lord on December 28, 2012, after an extended battle with diabetes and related illnesses.
Born on November 20, 1939 to Leslie W. “Rem” and Glenna Jarrell in Sandfield, he was a lifelong West Virginia resident. He was a U.S. Marine, barber, welder, coal miner, and school bus driver, but his true work, for more than 40 years, was as a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. An Ordained Bishop in the Church of God, he pastored the Marlinton Church of God from 1973-1990, and the Jeffrey Church of God from 1991-2012.
He made sharing his ministry with those unable to attend church a priority, recording and producing a radio show that aired on Sunday mornings on WZAC Danville/Madison for more than 15 years. He found joy in connecting with members of the community and ministered as he worked at the Jeffrey church’s weekly hotdog sales. His hands-on approach to building faith through community—whether by initiating weekend campouts and church under the open sky, or conducting baptisms in the Greenbrier River—touched many lives.
Janet (Epling) Jarrell, his wife and partner of 49 years survives him, as well as his sister Sharon “Kay” McDaniel and brother-in-law David McDaniel of Georgia. Also surviving him are his loving daughters Lisa Cochran of Jeffrey, Kimberly Jarrell of Jeffrey, and Krista Brooke of Harpers Ferry. As a proud “Poppy” he cherished spending time playing and imagining with his grandchildren: Ashley (Cochran) Hager, of Abbington, VA; Katherine Morris of Hickory, NC; Sarah (Cochran) Lockard of Mifflin; and Ivy Cochran of Jeffrey; and great grandchildren Addison Lockard, Logan Hager, and Jayden Lockard. His sons-in-law are Sammy Cochran and Dwayne Brooke and grandsons-in-law are Joseph Hager and Steward Justin Lockard.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Emma’s Kids, Zambia (Project #715-0116) through Church of God World Missions (http://www.cogwm.org).
