George Edward Porter, 84, of Branchland, WV, went to his heavenly home on September 7, 2024. George was born to Willis and Beulah Porter on July 24, 1940. He graduated from Guyan Valley High School in 1958. He retired from Jabo Supply Corporation of Huntington, WV, where he served many happy years as comptroller. George was a proud member of the United States Army Reserves enlisting in 1963 and retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant in 1992. In his 84 years he held many titles, but his most cherished role was family patriarch.

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved son, Jonathan Porter; his brothers, Foster and Homer Porter; sister Clara Porter; brothers- in-law, Fred Lucas, Chauncey “Bud” Lucas, Okey “Dwayne” Lucas, Jennings “Dale” Lucas, James Lucas, Allen Lucas, Roger Lucas, Ronald Lucas and Don Martens; his sister-in-law, Esther Martens.

George is survived by his treasured wife of 58 years, Karen Porter; daughter, Susan (Michael) Little; grandchildren, Gabriel, Reed and Claire Little, Samuel Porter, Zachary Dial, Erin (Andrew) Richardson; great-grandson Dean Richardson, niece, Kimberly Lucas-Day whom he considered a second daughter; sisters-in-law, Jeanie Lucas, Lula Lucas, Patsy Lucas, Carol Lucas, Peggy Lucas, Billie Lucas and Sharon Lucas; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Scites and many cherished nieces and nephews.

George was a born storyteller and loved to regale his loved ones with accounts of his adventures of growing up in rural Appalahcia to his time in the Army. He appreciated quiet country living, daily scripture devotions and coffee and crosswords every morning with his sweetheart. His charming sense of humor and clever wit endeared others to him; to spend time in his presence was to know peace and simple joy. George was the embodiment of kindness, and his gentle manner engendered the love and respect of family and friends. His legacy lives on through his precious grandchildren, he considered it a blessing to be an influential presence in their lives.

Final arrangements are closed to family only.

George was a philanthropist committed to supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In lieu of any flowers, if you wish to honor him, donations may be made to his favorite charity to pay his love forward. Condolences can be left at www.handley-fh.com
