James H. “Jim” Cooke, 82, left this earth in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Tuesday October 18. He was the son of Denna and Esta Cooke and was born on July 1, 1934 in Van, West Virginia, where he lived in the Y & O Coal Camp for many years surrounded by many loving relatives.
His family eventually moved to Madison and he graduated from Scott High School in 1952. After graduation he attended Marshall University. He married Kista Kay Cooke, his high school sweetheart, on September 4, 1954. They eventually made their home in Haddad Addition in Madison where they raised their family and lived for 50 years.
Jim was a Boy Scout leader, an Eagle Scout and earned the Arrow of Light.
He worked for Associates in Charleston briefly but eventually came back to Madison in 1963 to work for Ferrell and Hill Insurance Agency where he founded Boone Land and Realty with Dennie Lee Hill. He also worked for Premier Bank as an appraiser until 2013 when he officially retired.
Jim was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Danville where he served as a Deacon and leaves behind a broken-hearted church family.
He was an active member of the Madison Rotary Club for over 50 years, having held every office including membership director for the past 20 years. Jim was known for his passionate speeches about the importance of nominating new members who would become true Rotarians. He was also a Paul Harris Society member.
He served the City of Madison in many capacities over the years from 1993 to 2016.
Throughout his life he met many people in all walks of life and made a difference in those lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Left to celebrate his life are daughters, Kitty Barker and her husband Artie of Madison and Kim Dickenson of Grand Junction, Colorado; his sister Judy Byus and her husband Bob and their family; 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and several very special lifelong friends, nieces and nephews. We will miss him so very much but know God is in control.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, October 23 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with the Rev. David Cyfers officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
