Keith "Smokey" Miller

December 15, 1935 — December 30, 2022

Keith “Smokey” Miller, 87, of Madison entered his heavenly home on Friday, December 30, 2022, at HospiceCare in South Charleston, surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 15, 1935, to Ms. Edith Miller of Greenview.

Smokey served as a Commanding Officer in the 7th Artillery Group in the United States Army and was stationed in Thule, Greenland. After returning home and marrying the love of his life, he worked in many locations while being employed by Bunch Construction Company. Upon returning to the Madison / Danville area, he worked in the coal industry for Westmoreland Coal Company and Hobet Mining. Smokey was a talented “Jack of All Trades” and could fix or build about anything. After retirement, he teamed up with Rob Charcandy and the two of them were in great demand for their “handyman” skills. Smokey was known for his strong work ethic, intricate detail and patience in his endeavors, and his gift for gab. His love for his family was obvious, not only for his immediate family but his extended family, as well. One of his greatest blessings was getting to hold his first great-grandchild, Corey Blake, who was born December 10, 2022.
Smokey was a member of Madison Baptist Church where he volunteered his time with various projects until his health prevented that from happening. He enjoyed his conversations with Pastor Jim Butcher and the fellowship he shared with his church family.

In addition to his mother, Smokey was preceded in death by his “chosen” grandparents, Joe and Garnet Hopkins of Danville; father-in-law, Raymond Gillenwater and mother-in-law, Lorraine of Madison; brother-in-laws, Lester Dolin of Madison and Jim Gillenwater of South Charleston; sister-in-law. Donna Gillenwater of Clendenin; son-in-law, Bill Hancock of Madison; niece, Kelly Golden of Salisbury, NC; nephew, Jamie Gillenwater of South Charleston and special friend, Jack Charcandy of Danville.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of sixty years, Barbara of Madison; daughter, Julie (Mike) Sizemore of Madison; son, Chris (Hope) of Lagrange, Ohio; sister, Pauline Dolin of Madison; grandchildren, Corey (Breanna) Hancock and Matthew Hancock of Madison, Emma and Brock Miller of Lagrange, Ohio and great-grandson, Corey Blake Hancock of Madison. Brother-in-law, Ray (Pam) Gillenwater of Madison; sister-in-laws; Susie (Gary) Bell of Chapmanville, Phyllis Gillenwater of South Charleston, Kathy (Kevin) Hill of Alum Creek and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Emergency Department and Inpatient Services of Boone Memorial Health along with HospiceCare in South Charleston for the care and respect that was delivered during this difficult time.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville with Pastor Jim Butcher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Memory Gardens on Low Gap Road, Madison, WV with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578 of Madison, WV.
