Krissa Leigh Powell

June 23, 1989 — January 10, 2015

Krissa Leigh Powell, 25, of Madison earned her Angel wings on January 10, 2015 surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Krissa touched so many lives. She was such an inspiration to so many and chose to fight her battle with a smile on her face, love in her heart and faith in God. “God gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers” Krissa was exactly that.

A 2008 graduate of St. Albans High School, Krissa was actively involved in the band and went on to be a member of “The Pride of West Virginia” marching band for two seasons before her illness. Music was her passion. She loved animals especially her cat, Zeke. Family and friends were so important to her. She met the love of her life in 2013 and had recently become engaged.

Krissa was a member of the First Baptist Church of Danville where she loved helping with the youth.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Ruby Layne; and grandfathers, Buddy Vance and Donald Podunavac; and grandmother, Mary Elswick.

She is survived by her mother, Chanda Powell-Santy and brother, Taylor Santy of Madison; father, Ricky Powell of NC; step-father, Matt Santy of Massachusetts; fiancé, Adrian Mitchell of Morrisvale; grandparents, Sue Vance Podunavac, Jim and Darlene Powell and Phil Elswick; aunts and uncles, Scott Vance, Jason and Linnea Estep, James and Diana Powell, Jeremy Podunavac, Teresa Vance, Sam and Richie Elswick and Lisa and Andrew Jones; as well as a host of family and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Danville with the Rev. Geoff Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Danville Memorial Park, Danville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Handley Funeral Home in Danville.
