Lawrence Edward Keeney Jr., 83, of Turtle Creek, died at home Friday, September 14, 2018, following a short illness. He was born August 23, 1935, in Charleston, son of Lawrence Edward Keeney and Louise Keeney Midkiff. He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence E. Keeney III.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sandra Keeney; brothers, John Midkiff of Tampa, Florida, Frank Midkiff of Denver, Colorado, Andrew Midkiff of Mexico; and sister, Kathy Keeney of Akron, Ohio. He was raised by his mother, Louise Keeney Midkiff, and his step-father, EJ Midkiff, both now deceased.
Larry was blessed to spend his final birthday at home just days before he passed, He was particularly pleased to share cake and ice cream with Brianna who made him smile and he thought of Parker Ross as his godchild. The two were both very special to him.
A Charleston High graduate, he attended Morris Harvey College receiving a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Music.
Larry married his college sweetheart, Sandra, upon graduation. For the next five years, they decided to travel the country living in Tampa, Miami and Jacksonville, Florida; Akron, Ohio; Indianapolis, Indiana; Mananas, Virginia; and Charleston, West Virginia. The birth of their son, Lawrence E. Keeney III, prompted them to return home to Madison, West Virginia, to raise him surrounded by his loving extended family.
A life long Christian, Larry converted to Catholicism and was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Madison, where he was the pianist for many years.
Larry loved music. He was well known for playing the piano, guitar and singing. He was also an avid outdoorsman and woodworker. His career focused on business management, first with the family dry cleaners and then restaurant management in several states.
Much appreciation and many thanks to Sharon Canterbury, Brian and Karen Wait who were caring for Larry throughout his illness.
Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 21, at St Mary's Catholic Church in Madison, with Rev. Neil R. Buchlein officiating.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Handley Funeral Home in Danville.
