Lewis Delano Adkins, 81, of Pleasant View, WV died Monday the 28th of September after a long illness. He was born May 22, 1934, the son of the late Walter and Fannie Adkins. He is also preceded in death by his brother Walter Adkins Jr. and two sisters, Ruth Lovejoy and Geneva Reed.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Bryant Adkins; four daughters, Rhonda (Keith) McCoy of Salt Rock, WV, Angela (Elbie) Pritchard of Branchland, WV, Regina (Gregory) Sanders of Barboursville, WV, and Deborah (Kent) Hall of Pleasant View, WV; five grandchildren, Monica (Matthew) Tully of Salt Rock, WV, Jennifer Pritchard of Branchland, WV, Annie (Matthew) Kisling of Huntington, WV, Ashley Sanders of Phoenix, AZ, and Cory Hall of Pleasant View, WV; two great-grandchildren, McKinlee and Madison Tully of Salt Rock, WV; three brothers, Waldo (Betty) Adkins of Chester, WV, Dana Wise (Ernestine) Adkins of Prichard, WV, Carl Fisher (Sharon) Adkins of Prichard, WV; two sisters, Rowena Profitt of Glenwood, WV, Patricia Hicks of Branchland, WV, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the Lincoln Baptist Church and dedicated his life to serving the Lord. He graduated from Hamlin High School. He was a master mechanic and a 50 year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 132. He was an entrepreneur who owned many businesses throughout his lifetime. After retirement, one of his greatest pleasures was spending time on the Adkins Riverview Farm on the Ohio River. He was a member of the Hamlin Masonic Lodge, #79 and was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.
Lewis was an honest, hardworking man who dedicated his life to his family. He took joy in the presence of his family members and pride in their every accomplishment. He spent much of his adult life struggling with serious illness, and yet he was always ready with a kind word, a joke, or a hug for his family and friends. He was a courageous person who always endeavored to do the right thing and he served as a role model for his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. His wife Martha was his closest companion and he was entirely devoted to their life together. He will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Friday October 2, 2015 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV with Ray Adkins officiating. The burial will follow in the Goldsbury Cemetery, Sias, WV.
A visitation will be from 6pm to 8pm Thursday.
