Lillian “Jeanette” Bell, 85, of Big Ugly Creek in Boone County, lost her courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at her home with her beloved family at her side. Jeanette was born on February 22, 1931 on Mud River, in Lincoln County West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Carl G. and Pearl Ferrell Adkins. She was retired from Logan General Hospital (Logan Regional Medical Center). She was an active member of the Danville Church of Christ.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ike Bell; two sisters, Maxine Adkins Hill and Susie Adkins Thompson; and one brother, Jerry T. Adkins.
Jeanette is survived by daughters, Sandy (Jim) Staats of Pt. Pleasant, West Virginia, Sammie (Rick) Cook of Big Ugly and Marsha (Gary) Ferguson of Big Ugly; sister, Phyllis (Jim) Walker of Moberly, Missouri; granddaughters, Jaime (Brent) Sang of Pt. Pleasant, West Virginia, Jennifer (Matt) Jernigan of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Jessica Ferguson (Sunni Adkins) of Big Ugly; grandson, Justin (Melissa) Cook of Ft. Bliss, Texas; great grandchildren, Carlee and Brennen Sang of Point Pleasant, Jake and Finley Jernigan of Knoxville, Tennessee, Kaylee Cook of Ft. Bliss, Texas and Deklen Adkins of Big Ugly. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews throughout the country.
Jeanette was a very hard worker all her life holding many different titles. She and her husband owned many food establishments including the Danville Lunch and the Mecca Drive-In in Madison where she was the cook among various other duties. She was an excellent cook and loved to feed everyone who came to her home. She was also a mail carrier for the US Postal Service and worked for HECKS Department Store in their warehouse in Nitro in the 60’s. She retired from her position as an EKG Technician at Logan General Hospital in 1988 following open heart surgery. She also served on the LGH Auxiliary until her health would no longer allow her to participate.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Dignity Hospice in Chapmanville for their excellent care of Jeanette during her illness. They would also like to thank Dr. Billy Mullen from LRMC for his excellent care and compassion for over 20 years; to Dr. Ziad Salem for his care during the past 4 years; and Dr. Kathy Harvey for taking the lead and getting Hospice care so quickly for her in the past few weeks. They would also like to thank the staff at Logan Regional Medical Center for their excellent care during the past four years as she had many ER visits and overnight stays.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, WV with Kenneth Mitchell and Richard Runyon officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens on Low Gap Road.
