Linda Johnson

1938 — 2024

Linda Mae Johnson (Green), beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away September 23rd, 2024. Linda was born in 1938, one of seven siblings born to Hobert & Enola Green . She grew up in Bim, West Virginia and graduated from Van High School in 1956. After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI, along with several high school friends. Even though she loved her time in D.C., she could not wait to come back home to her family and friends in West Virginia. After returning home, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator in Charleston for C&P Telephone, and later went to work at Sanford’s Store in Bim where she met the love of her life, Freeman Johnson. Linda and Freeman married in 1963 and welcomed a son, Paul Anthony Johnson, in 1965.

Linda was always the life of the party; she never met a stranger. She enjoyed reading, shopping and taking long Sunday drives, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She loved to gather everyone at her house and host game nights, playing cards or bingo well into the night. Linda also took great pride in helping to organize many years of reunions for Van High School. You could most often find her sitting on her front porch in her rocking chair enjoying the breeze and watching the cars go by.

The light of Linda’s life was her grandson, Clay Anthony Johnson. Clay and Grandma Linda were able to spend lots of time together when he was growing up. She loved to tell him funny stories about his dad and go through old pictures to show him, but most of all she loved spoiling him rotten, of which she was most successful.

Linda was a friend to all who met her, but she had one special friend, Millie Welch of Concord, North Carolina, who was more like a sister than a friend. Linda and Millie grew up together, raised their children together, worked and vacationed together, and continued their friendship to the very end.

Linda was preceded in death by her mother and father, Hobert & Enola Green, her husband, Freeman Johnson, and her siblings, Winoma McNeely, Georgie Adkins, Louella Lowe, and Harold Dean Green. She is survived by her son, Paul, daughter-in-law, Kristi, and grandson, Clay, all of Mooresville, North Carolina, as well as her siblings, Shirley Green of Bob White and Terry Green of Bim, and many nieces and nephews, who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.

The family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest Healthcare for the excellent care she received in her time there, but they would also like to especially thank Lissa & Jimmy Loftus, her honorary daughter and son-in-law, for watching over her the last 17 years and taking care of her like she was their own.
