Mary Evelyn Abbott

September 14, 1931 — December 23, 2024

Mary Evelyn Abbott, of Madison, WV, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 23, 2024, at the age of 93. She was a loving wife to her late husband Harold, a devoted mother to her son John, a loving grandmother to John Paul & Sarah Blosser, and a loving and proud great-grandmother to Cooper, Penelope and Kayne.

Born on September 14, 1931, she graduated from Scott High School at the age of 16. She continued her education at Marshall University, where she earned her two-year teaching degree, began teaching, and then completed her bachelor’s degree at Morris Harvey College. She would go on to teach not only in Boone County, but also Lake Wells High School in Lake Wales, Florida. In Boone County, she taught at Foster Grade, Van High, and Madison-Danville Jr. High (Madison Middle School). 

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Harold; her parents Lonnie C. and Mary B. Meadows; brothers Buster, Jim, Leroy, Harold Ray and Lonnie Jr.; and sisters Virginia Duke and Louise Doss. 

Mary is survived by her son, John Abbott (Jennifer); grandchildren, John Paul Abbott and Sarah Blosser (Jacob); great grandchildren, Cooper, Penelope, and Kayne; and several nieces and nephews. 

A graveside service will be on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Boone Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations be made to the Madison Baptist Church Food Bank or the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.
