Mary Velma Hill, 98, of Madison, WV, went home to be with her Lord on August 29, 2017. She was born to the late Mary and Earl Kelley in Marshall County on April 12, 1919. Her family moved to Huntington, WV, when she was a young child.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Opie; son, David; daughter-in-law, Janet; and sister, Ruth (Doug) Maynard. Velma was also preceded in death by grandson-in-law Phil Ratliff.
Left to cherish their many memories are her son, Larry of Julian; daughter-in-law, Martha of Madison; grandson, Larry, Jr. and wife Jennifer of Springville, IN; and granddaughter, Jenni Ratliff of Harrisburg, NC. Visits to Grandma’s house will be missed by great-grandchildren Haley and Dylan Ratliff, and Abby, Ollie, and Charlotte Hill. She will also be missed and remembered by a host of extended family members, neighbors, and friends.
Velma was a lifelong member of the Olive Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and played the piano for many years. When her health prevented her from personally attending church services, Velma continued her daily Bible readings and prayer time every morning at home. She loved her Lord, her family, and her friends.
After her marriage and moving to Boone County in 1944, Velma worked at Fryman’s Hardware and Boone National Bank until retirement. She was also the bookkeeper for Boone Holding Company and Walhonde until a few weeks ago. Velma was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Madison Chapter 121, where she served in many leadership roles over the years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The family would like to thank the staff at Boone Memorial Hospital for their loving care during Mom’s final days. A special note of gratitude must be expressed to Mom’s neighbors, Patty Jo and Jim Brammer, who assisted and checked on her daily.
