Mary Elizabeth Williams Tamplin, 98, of Racine passed away at her home on Big Coal River, surrounded by family on September 20, 2013.
She was the wife of the late Clarence D. Tamplin.
Born on January 5, 1915, daughter of the late Owen Blair Williams and Fannie Nutter Williams, she grew up in Hurricane Ridge of Greenbrier County where her parents served as her teachers in one-room schools.
Graduating from Rainelle High School she attended Glenville State College and graduated from West Virginia University, earning her Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degrees. Coming to Boone County to teach, she met her husband and served positions at Van, Scott, and Sherman high schools until retirement when she served as a substitute in Boone and Kanawha County schools. She also taught part-time at Morris Harvey College, adding up to a teaching career of 47 years.
Mrs. Tamplin founded the Boone County Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority and United Nations clubs in three high schools and three colleges. She was a past president of the West Virginia Association of United Nations. A founding member of the Racine United Methodist Church, American Association of University Women, and the Boone County Crippled Children’s Society, as well as being active in the Madison Women’s Club, Rebecca Lodge, and the Boone County Development Association. In recent years she remained active in Boone County Association of Retired School Employees, CEOS, Racine United Methodist Church, and Racine Community Seniors organization.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Lou Reed (Bruce) and Jesse Curry; niece Dr. Eleanor Lou Curry; nephew Chester Curry; and great niece Janie Reed.
Survivors include her daughters Suzanne Lee (Jim) of Guilford, CT, Jenny Light (Dan) of Racine; grandchildren, Scott Lee (Jennifer), David Lee (Jennifer), Jennifer Lee O’Brien (Donal), Chad Light (Heidi), Jana Light, and Mary Hannah Elizabeth Light Butler (Josh); 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephew.
The family will receive visitors Thursday, Sept. 26, 6 – 8 p.m. Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV . The memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, September 27th, at the funeral home, with Rev. Damron Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow at the Tamplin Cemetery in Racine.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Boone County Community Foundation at P.O. Box 695, Madison, WV 25l30, through which a scholarship is being established in memory of Mary Tamplin.
