Mavis Martin Ellis, 89, born September 5, 1925, the daughter of the late Robert and Garnett Workman Martin and wife of the late Rev. William Hayes Ellis of Branchland, WV, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends in Pleasant View on Sunday, March 8, 2015.
Preceding her in death were her brothers, Denver, Quentin, and Colby Martin.
She leaves behind her son, Gregory H. Ellis (Maggie); a granddaughter, Shelley Ellis-Kveton (Randy); one grandson Gregory H. “Chip” Ellis, II (Mimi); three great-granddaughters, Kenley, Kennasyn, and Kennedy Kveton; two great-grandsons, Graysen and Zayden Ellis; two brothers, Fred Martin (Donna) and Allen Martin (Joyce); two sisters, Carole Martin Bates (Mike) and Phyllis Martin Adkins (Dickie); her church family, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbors.
The following week after graduating from Guyan Valley High School in 1942 at the age of 16, she left for Baltimore, MD. Working the midnight shift at Glen L. Martin Company where bomber airplanes were assembled, she was one of many young women who served her country in a civilian role during WWII. She was later employed by the U.S. Postal Service, Lincoln County Clerk’s office, Lincoln County Board of Education, and also attended Marshall University.
Of her many attributes, the one we’ll remember most was her desire to put others before herself. Last and most important, she was a follower of Christ, and until her illness, a devoted member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Bowen, Dignity Hospice, caregivers Susie Fields, Nedra Dingess, Jeannie Elkins, Barbara Baker, Teresa Webb, and all who helped in any way.
Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM, Wednesday, March 11th at Pleasant View Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted following visitation by Rev. Chuck Adkins. Burial will be in Fairview Memory Gardens, Hamlin, WV. McGhee Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV, is in charge of arrangements.
