Melvin “Lyle” Jarrell, 94, of Bob White, West Virginia passed away peacefully at the Boone nursing Center on November 5, 2013. He was born January 5, 1919 and was preceded in death by his brother Othor and Norma Jean Hager Jarrell, his loving wife of seventy years. He is survived by his son, Gary L. Jarrell and his wife Becky of Naples, Florida.
Lyle was a veteran of World War II and had previously served in the last active Mounted Calvary Division in the United States Army. He reenlisted after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and served in the infantry during the invasion of Normandy.
He was a member of the Wharton Missionary Baptist Church for approximately sixty years. He served as a Deacon and taught Sunday school class for forty years. The Church was truly the center of his life and his faith sustained him above all else. He will be sadly missed by all his brothers and sisters in Christ.
Lyle enjoyed hunting and fishing and still enjoyed fishing for trout at age ninety. He lived a full life having worked for Koppers Coal Company and Eastern Associated Coal Corporation (Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates) for approximately thirty years. During all his working years, he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2013, at the Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia with Pastor Darrell Searls officiating. The viewing will be at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Chapel. A military graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens conducted by the VFW Boone Post 5578 of Madison, West Virginia.
