Paul Stover of Foster, WV formerly of Sylvester, WV died after a battle with cancer on August 5, 2017.

He was born September 24, 1938 at Colcord, WV to Robert and Mary Stover. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, Booker and Sara McVey Stover and Jim and Dora Southard; and brothers, Earl, Roger, and Benny an MIA in the Korean War.

Left to cherish Paul’s memory is his childhood sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Nancy; daughters, Kim (Johnny) Williams of Shady Springs, WV and Paula (Mark Caldon) of Fairplain, WV; grandchildren he adored, Paul (Celesta) Kinder of Clarksville, TN, Kevin Kinder of Ashford, WV, Ashley Gill of Fairplain, WV and Carly (Matt) Brohard of Spencer, WV; sister, Bonnie (Charlie) Burdette of Colcord, WV; brother, Theodore (Mary Jane) of Ripley, WV; special sister-in-law, Connie Hendricks of Whitesville, WV; and Carl Smith of Foster, WV who he loved like a brother.

In his younger days he loved to play baseball and played for Clearfork High School and the American Legion teams in Whitesville and Clay, WV. He had the reputation of being a very good pitcher. Upon graduation from high school he was invited to Florida to attend the spring training camp of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team. He was later released due to an injury sustained while playing there. Although his hopes for a professional career ended then, he continued to play with various teams in the area for several years. He found the time to coach Little League baseball teams and be a scoutmaster for many young boys in the area.

Paul was a well respected, hard working man who spent forty five years working in the coal industry. He previously worked for Carbon Fuel Company, Consolidated Coal Company, as a superintendent at Cedar Coal Company and at retirement was superintendent of operations of Dal Tex Coal Company. In his retirement years Paul stayed busy. He and his wife spent many hours creating beautiful flower gardens at their home. He tended vegetable gardens, fished, hunted, and enjoyed other outdoor activities.

A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the First Baptist Church, Whitesville, WV where he was a member. A friend, Pastor Joe Lane will be officiating. Interment will be at Pineview Cemetery, Orgas, WV.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice nurses Sally Starkey and Libby Smith for the compassionate care they gave Paul during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made in Paul’s memory to Hospice Care 467 Main Street, Madison, WV 25130.
