Raymond S. White, Sr., 93, of Charleston, West Virginia died Sunday, February 19, 2017 at CAMC General Division in the presence of family.
He was born and raised in Jeffrey, West Virginia, on June 4, 1923, the son of the late Willis Howard and Macel Carnie White. He was a proud World War II veteran serving with the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment Combat Team, then in the 505 attached to the 82nd Airborne, having the honor to serve his country, leaving service as a Staff Sergeant and marching in the Victory Parade in New York City. His entire working life was as a coal miner, having 37 1/2 years in the coal mines and retiring from Westmoreland Coal Company in 1979. On December 7, 1944, he married the love of his life, Margaret Dolin, and they were married for 45 years until her death in 1990. Also preceding him in death in addition to his wife and parents was an infant daughter, Carol Lee; son and his best friend and companion, Raymond S. White, Jr.; brother, Warren Henry White; and sisters, Orpha Siler, Carnie Mitchell, Chloe Eldridge, Poudie Nelson and Dolly Ferrell.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kitty and Rick Comer and grandsons, Brent and Brian all of Charleston; sisters, Margaret Hager of South Charleston and Annabelle Hilderbrand (Bob) of Maryland; brothers, Willis Howard White, Jr. (Sharon) of Virginia and Paul White (Annette) of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Louise White of South Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews; and his church family at Clothier Presbyterian Church which he attended until two weeks prior to his death which brought so much joy into his life. He loved his West Virginia Mountaineers and his Chicago Cubs, who he lived to see win the World Series.

Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 22 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia with the Rev. Charles Ferguson and the Rev. Tom Bias officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
