Richard Douglas Cook of Uneeda, Boone County, West Virginia passed away on June 29, 2024 at age 69.
Rick was born on August 5, 1954 in Huntington, West Virginia to Douglas Ray Cook and Wanda Lee (Carter) Cook. He was the very first baby born at the new Cabell Huntington Hospital. Rick grew up in Charleston, graduating from George Washington High School and later attending Marshall University.
Rick worked for a time as a shipbuilder in Newport News, Virginia, where he helped build the aircraft U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower. He later worked as the soundman for the Flaherty Brothers Band in the 1970s before taking a job at Appalachian Tire in Danville, West Virginia for many years. from which he recently retired. Rick was regarded by many as the only person to consult on questions about tires.
In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roscoe and Dona (Bias) Cook and Ezra and Hattie Carter, as well as his sister, Teresa Lynn Cook, and his stepmother, Faith Woods, who thought he was wonderful.
Rick is survived by his wife, Jeannie Lowry Cook; his daughter, Sapphire (Caleb) Starkey; two cherished granddaughters, Adelyn and Emersyn Starkey; sister, Dr. Bridget Stevens; brother, Victor (Tara) Woods; numerous nieces and nephews; three dogs, Wyatt, Chester and Millie; granddog, Odin; and grandcat Luna.
There will be no service. Rick would want his friends and loved ones to enjoy life and treat each other well. Handley Funeral Home in Danville is assisting the family.
