Robert E. “Bob” Plants, 89, of Madison, WV, passed away on Monday Jan. 25, 2016 at Boone Memorial Hospital.
Robert was born on Sept. 21st, 1926 in Madison, WV. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Barbara H. Plants, his parents George and Essie Plants and brother George H. Plants Jr.
Mr. Plants is survived by two sisters, Ann Deem of Cincinnati, Ohio and Wanda Burgess of Charleston, WV. He is survived by his three children, son Nicholas Plants of Edmond, Oklahoma, daughters Jeanne A. Southern of Madison, WV, Vickie L. Guinn of Gainesville, Fl. and a son-in-law James T. Southern. He is survived by five grandchildren, Nicholas Plants, Stephanie Plants, Rachel Newman, Amy Fowler, and Robert Guinn.
Mr. Plants is a World War II veteran and a recipient of the Eastern Star Award for his contributions as a historian. He was formerly employed by Westmoreland Coal Company as Personnel Manager. He was one of the original founders of the Riverview Country Club Golf Course.
After retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, golfing and volunteering at the Coal Museum. His children discovered that he had a “hidden talent” as a craftsman/ woodworker. He served as President of the Boone County Genealogy Society.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Boone Co. VFW, Madison United Methodist Church, or to the Boone Co. Genealogy Society.
Services will be held at the Handley Funeral Home of Danville, WV. Visitation will be Thursday Jan. 28th from 6-8:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2:00 on Friday Jan. 29th with burial services following at the Boone Memorial Park.
