Roger Dale Starkey, 71, of Madison, WV passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at home surrounded by his family after a long illness.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Grace Starkey Mitchell and Fred Starkey; his sister, Wilma Haire of Haines, Florida; and one step-brother, Danny Mitchell of Madison.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Thompson Starkey; sons, Jon and Ricky (Tracy) of Madison; and daughter, LeeAnn Vanhoose and companion Rick Wernsil of Salisbury, NC; grandsons, Tyler (Ashley) and Caleb Starkey of Madison, WV and Zachary and Evan Starkey of Cranbury, PA; granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Shalea Vanhoose of Salisbury, NC; great-grandchildren, Chase and Emma Grace Starkey of Madison; brothers, Freddie (Pat) Starkey and Larry (Loretta) Starkey; sister, Phyllis Rifle (Jimmy) all of Madison; and stepfather, Ventrue Mitchell of Madison.
Roger retired from CSX after 39 years experience and he was a volunteer at the Boone County Coal Museum, a member of the Madison Baptist Church and a 1964 graduate of Scott High School. You could always find Roger at Toney’s Grocery in West Madison, his favorite hangout.
Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville with the Rev. Jim Butcher officiating. Burial will follow in Boone Memorial Park, Madison.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Madison Baptist Church Food Pantry in Roger’s name.
