Reverend Roger Glen Tinnel 66 went home to his heavenly Father, February 12, 2013 after battling a long illness. He was born November 16, 1946 in Summersville, WV. He was the son of the late Glen and Mellie Tinnel. He was a graduate of Nicholas County High School in 1965. A three year letterman in football, started and played in the AAA state championship his sophomore year, he was also 1st team all state offensive and defensive tackle in AAA his senior year. With various college scholarship offers, however, he chose a different path and went into the ministry. He was ordained at the Birch River Baptist Church in 1968. Roger was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Glenville State College. Later he received his Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Before serving and retiring from Madison Baptist Church he was the pastor for the following churches in West Virginia; Williamson First Baptist, Racine First Baptist (his longest tenured church), Big Clear Creek Baptist in Rupert, New England Baptist Church in Washington, Hope Baptist Church in Frame Town, and Oceana First Baptist Church. He also served as a pastor of the Bethany Baptist Church in Crothersville, IN while in seminary. Roger served one six-year term on the general Board of ABC-USA in the West Virginia Baptist Convention he served two terms on the Executive Board and as the Dean of the School of Christian studies. He was active in the associations where he served in the WVBC, including serving as moderator of the Coal River Association. Roger also service as a volunteer chaplain at Camden-Clark Hospital in Parkersburg and Appalachian Regional Hospital in Williamson. He also served for eleven years at the Chaplain to the Sherman High School football team. Shortly after Roger’s retirement he received the Word W. Hibbes Ministerial Award from Alderson-Broadus College. The award is given annually to a pastor who has an outstanding contribution to strengthening the ministry of a town of country church. Roger was also a diehard West Virginia Mountaineer fan, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is survived by the love of his life and partner in ministry Joan 5 months short of 41 years; son, Jason Lee Tinnel and wife Maxine and sons, his pride and joy Keith and Alex of Danville; brothers, Gary (Betty) of Craigsville, Allen (Cherie) of Charleston; sisters, Juanita of Birch River and Linda (James) of Oceana; brother in law, Larry (Sherri) Roop of Summersville; along with several nieces and nephew and a host of friends and church family. Funeral service will be 11 am Saturday, Feb.16, 2013 Madison Baptist Church, Madison, WV with Rev. Max Hill and Rev. John Tinnel officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Muddlety, WV. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church. Arrangements are by the Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV.
