Ronald Gene Porter, a lifelong resident of West Hamlin, a dedicated steelworker, Navy veteran, and former volunteer firefighter, passed away on March 3, 2025, in West Hamlin, West Virginia. Born on May 9, 1936, in Sharples, West Virginia, Ronald lived a life marked by service, hard work, and devotion to family and community.
Ronald built a career as a steelworker with Steel of West Virginia before retiring. Prior to that, he served his country with honor in the United States Navy as a Second-Class Petty Officer. His commitment to service extended beyond the military; he also contributed to their local community as a member of the West Hamlin Volunteer Fire Department.
Ronald was preceded in death by his beloved wife Louise; parents Homer and Bonnie Porter of West Hamlin; sister Nedra Boston of Charleston; and brother Lary Porter of West Hamlin. He is survived by their children: Earl Baisden of Foster, Ronald Porter Jr. of Milton, and Teddy Porter of Red House. Their legacy continues through their grandchildren: Bridget Arbaugh, Mindy Thompson, Paige Porter, Ashley Porter, Gabriel Porter, and Ethan Porter. Ronald is also survived by his siblings: Norman Porter of Huntington; Norvel Porter of West Hamlin; Elzora Triplett of Apopka, Florida; Anita (Dave) George of Summerville, South Carolina; and Homer Porter of New Carlisle, Ohio. Additionally, he leaves behind his niece Bonnie Boston of South Charleston and a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, and friends and family who will cherish his memory.
Ronald’s life was one of dedication—to family, to country, and to the values he held dear. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Funeral services will be 1:00pm Friday, March 7, 2025 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV. The burial will follow in Enon Cemetery, Salt Rock, WV where a military service will be conducted. A visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Condolences can be left at www.handleyfh.com.
