Roy Blanchard “R.B.” Foster, passed on to Heaven Nov. 29, 2014 to join his beloved wife of 59 years, Mary Virginia, along with her parents and all his brothers and sisters.
He was a resident of Van and Madison, WV and recently of Hubbard Hospice House West, South Charleston, WV.
He was 93 years old, born December 28, 1920. R.B. was the third child born to Roy B. Foster and Lilly Inez James Foster, of Rutledge, TN. His family moved to Van, WV, when he was four years old.
R.B. was pre-deceased by his wife, Mary Virginia, parents, Roy and Lilly Foster, sisters, Tennessee “Tinnie” Jarrell, Lena Scott, brothers, Carl, Phillip and James “Jim” Foster.
R.B. is survived by his children; Brenda Ann McNeely (Douglas) of Alum Creek, WV and Thomas Foster (Carolyn), of Madison, grandchildren; Beverly Ann Hager (Les), Mary Alice White (Danny), Stephany Lynn O’Neal (Roger) , Derrick O’Brian Foster(Katie), great grandchildren; Eric Douglas Hager, Lesli Ann Hager, Corey E.W. White, Dalton O’Neal, McChesney O’Neal, Tanner Foster, and Grace Foster. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, one sister in law Madeline Tapley, and a huge group of friends and neighbors.
When R.B. was fourteen years old, he followed his Dad into the coal mines, where he worked for over forty years, first at the face hand loading and later in the maintenance department as an electrician.
He and James Cook of Van organized the first little league baseball for that area. He was very instrumental in the Boy Scouts of America, worked over fifteen years, with many of “his boys”, who kept in touch with him and his family, the rest of his life. Being of the Methodist Faith, he made sure all his scouts attended Sunday school and Church every Sunday and was also very strict on them showing respect and being helpful to all people of their church. One of his proudest stories he liked to tell was “We practiced the Methodist faith; seven of “my boys” became preachers, all Baptist!” Then he would laugh. He was always a very giving person, with his time and financially. He always worked hard and took care of his family, his parents and others in the community.
He belonged to several organizations, throughout the years, Scout Master, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, member of the Masons 50 years plus, U.M.W.A. 70 years plus, I.O.O. F. 50 years plus, Madison Rotarians, and Board Member Boone Memorial Hospital , 20 years. He was awarded the 35th Star of the State of West Virginia, by the Secretary of State, Joe Manchin, now Senator Joe Manchin, the award was presented by Mr. A.J. Manchin.
Funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday, Handley Funeral Home, Danville WV. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.
