Roy L. Harless 79 of Danville, WV was born on May 21,1933 and was the son of Grady and Maudie Harless of Ridgeview WV died at April 19, 2013 at home after a long illness. He was the youngest of six children in whom all have preceded him in death, Ruby Martin, Pearl Kelley, Maxine Stamper, Hassell Harless, and Basil Ray Harless. He attended Boone County schools. After school he was drafted into the United States Army from 1953 until discharged in 1955.He was then involved with the opening of the Miners Hospital in Beckley, WV, from 1955 until 1967. While working he attended the WV Barber College in 1965 and worked as a barber also until 1967. He left barbering in Beckley in order to become partners with Webb & Neal Funeral Home in Beckley where he worked until 1968 and wanted to come back to Boone County. He opened his own barber shop in Madison, WV in 1968. He went to work for Madison Police Department from 1969 to 1970 and quit there to buy Aide Ambulance Service, whick he ran from 1970 to 1979. The ambulance service was then bought out by Boone County Ambulance Serivce. From 1979 until 1982 he worked as a barber. In 1982 he took a position again at the Madison Police Department in 1982 and became Police Chief and remained there until he had to take an early retirement due to health problems on June 1, 1995. Being an entrepreneur as Roy was, he met the most important challenge of his life. He met the love of his life Lucille (Perkins) Browning, in whom he married on Dec. 18, 1992. After retirement they decided to move in 1996 to Murray,KY and start a new life. He resided in Murry until May 21, 2011. He lost the love of his life, Lucille, on August 4, 2011. He moved back to Danville and lived there until his death. Those of you that knew him, either loved him or despised him, never the less you knew where he stood. Roy never had any children until he married Lucille and he inherited a wonderful step daughter in whom the family appreciates all of her love and care for him while he was in Kentucky. However, he had a host of nieces, nephews, a sister in law, great nieces and nephews of who he loved very much. We will miss him but his fond memories will last forever in our hearts and minds. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013 Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV with Pastor John Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison, with military graveside services by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
