Sharon Arlene Cook was born October 16, 1950 and died December 17, 2014.

She was the daughter of John and Enid (Bill) Cook who preceded her in death.

She is survived by brother, William A. (Cookie) Cook and his wife, Patricia D. Cook, their son, John Eric Cook and their daughter, Rebekah Rollins along with their spouses and children. She is also survived by her step-mother, Irene Cook who currently resides in Teays Valley, WV; and step-brothers and sisters, Diane, Shelia, Tony and Kevin.

Sharon graduated from Marsh Fork High School in 1968. She attended Beckley Junior College before beginning her career in 1971 with the United States Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Starting as a Clerk Typist Sharon held a variety of positions before retiring in January of 2011 as a GS12, step 10, Mine Safety and Health Specialist for Training with MSHA’s Educational Field Services Group.

Sharon’s position as a Training Specialist required her to travel throughout the United States in support of miners in the Coal and Non-Coal industries. Holmes Safety Association, helping to organize the Coal River and Aracoma Safety Councils. She was instrumental in organizing the annual Mine Rescue contest in the Madison and Logan areas.

In 2006 Sharon was honored as the recipient of the National Woman of the Year Award from the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association for her outstanding service, dedication and contributions to mine safety. She was an active member of the TRAM Training Committee for a number of years. She helped with exhibit coordination and presentations at the Mine Academy in Beckley, WV.

Sharon leaves behind a large group of family and friends who will mourn their loss. Uncles, Aunts and Cousins, the Madison/Logan family of friends as well as those from the Big Coal River will all remember her with respect and great affection.

Services for Sharon will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV.
