Theodric Murphy, affectionately called 'Opie', passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, July 1, 2018 after a well fought battle with cancer. During the last days of his life, he was supported by his loving family. Theodric was born June 30, 1951 in Taplin, West Virginia. He is the fourth of ten children born to the Rev. Tony J. Murphy, Sr. and Marietta (Calvin) Murphy. He graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. degree in Mathematics. Theodric taught all levels of math from basic to pre-calculus at Man High School for 30+ years prior to retiring in December, 2014. During the formative years of his life, Theodric attended Earling Grade School, Man Junior High School, and received his high school diploma from Man High School where he served as senior class president and graduated second in his class as salutatorian. After retiring from teaching, Theodric began writing a complex solutions mathematics book which remains unpublished. As a young man Theodric gave his life to Christ and later expressed his call into the preaching ministry serving as an evangelist.
Theodric is survived by his father and nine siblings: Rev. Tony J. Murphy, Sr.; James A. Murphy, Sr.; Rev. Dr. Franklin Murphy, Sr.; Tony J. Murphy, II; Gene Murphy; Gregory L. Murphy; Jeannetta Muhammad; Nafilia A. Long; Dianna L. Jones; Larissa U. Sanchez; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marietta Calvin-Murphy.
Service will be held at 2:00pm Monday, July 9, at Handley Funeral Home in Danville, West Virginia with Rev. Dr. Franklin Murphy officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill.
