Verna Mitchell Woodrum/Holstein, 93, of Madison, WV passed away on Sunday, January 7th, 2018 at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Danville.
She was born on April 6th, 1924 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma to the late Bertie and Narssia Briggs. She was preceded in death by husbands Jack Woodrum and Kenneth Holstein, one son, Jackie Woodrum; two brothers, Earl and Dugan; two sisters, Vivian Spears and Martha Colburn; grandchildren, Bryan Blethan and Arron Setser.
She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, was of Cherokee Heritage, and spoke some Cherokee, her grandfather, Stout Chair, was picked up as a baby on the Trail of Tears from North Carolina to Oklahoma.
She loved the outdoors, church, children, had many friends, loved animals, and walking early in the mornings. She was Vice President of a 4-H Club as a teenager, worked during WWII, including in a Coke Cola factory. She was a stay at home mom after her children were born. She always had dinner ready when her children came home from school. You could smell the food as you were walking up the alley and she always let us be children growing up. We always respected and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Diana (Dewayne) Green of Bim, Darlene (John) Hager of Powell Creek, Denise (Dennis) Vint of Low Gap and Dennis (Kim) Woodrum of Foster; eight step children; grandchildren, Tina (Mark) Agosti, Shelby Vint, Jonathan Setser, Melanie (Mike) Stila, Chad Blethan, and Amber Wooten, Jackie Woodrum, Melena Bias, Eric Woodrum, Jessica Woodrum and Jacqueline Woodrum; 14 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Ann Fritts.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Handley Funeral Home, Danville, WV with the Rev. Ray Barker officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison.
