Virgil Dell “Buddy” Wheatley, 73, of Hubert Hill Road, Chapmanville, WV died on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Danville. He was born July 21, 1944, the son of the late Myrtle Mae and Ray Wheatley of Hubert Hill.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Patricia Raff Wheatley; sister and brother in law, Lola and Newell Hager; brother in law Tiny Gartin; and brother, Namen Ray Wheatley.
Those left to cherish his memories are two daughters, Lisa (Robert) Green of Madison and Brandy Hughes of Newark, Ohio; two sons, Michael (Diana) Wheatley of Newark, Ohio and Virgil Ray (Jill Drumm) Wheatley of Johnstown, Ohio; his siblings, Nola Faye (Don) Lemmon, Oma Carol Gartin, and Berta Jane Smith; half brother, Ricky Gullott; eight grandchildren, Michael Joseph Wheatley, Holli Diane Wheatley, Rachel Leann Shaner, Nathan Ray Shaner, Cameron Lee Green, Lexus Gabrielle Hughes, Chancellor Monroe Hughes, and Raylyn Rachelle Wheatley; one great-grandchild; and lots of family and friends.
Virgil enjoyed life to the fullest enjoying bluegrass music especially singing and playing by his son Ray. He also enjoyed Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival and Ralph Stanley Bluegrass Festival, 4-wheel riding, and deer hunting. He was an amazing mechanic. He retired as a heavy equipment operator at Erthel Mining. He had also been a Union painter throughout his life.
Service will be 3 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Handley Funeral Home in Danville with Ronnie Abshire officiating. Burial will follow in Wheatley-Ellis Cemetery, Chapmanville. Pall bearers will be Ray Wheatley, Robert Green, Nathan Shaner, Cameron Green, Douglas Raff, Lewis Gartin and Zachary Lemmon.
Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
